Migrating from Asana

This guide walks you through importing your Asana projects, tasks, and comments into Fishladder Projects.

Before You Start

  • You need an Asana account with access to the projects you want to import.
  • You must be an admin on the Fishladder team you're importing into (or create a new one during the wizard).
  • The import is read-only — nothing in your Asana workspace will be changed.

Step 1: Select Source

Go to /migrations and select Asana from the source platform dropdown, then click Continue.

Step 2: Connect Your Asana Account

Click Connect Asana Account. You'll be redirected to Asana's OAuth screen to authorize Fishladder with read-only access. After granting access, you'll be sent back to the wizard automatically.

Step 3: Choose a Workspace

If your Asana account belongs to multiple workspaces, select the one you want to import from. If you only have one workspace, it will be pre-selected.

Step 4: Select Projects

You'll see a list of all projects in the selected workspace. Check the ones you want to import. Archived projects are shown but marked — you can include or skip them.

Step 5: Choose a Team

Decide where the imported data should go:

  • Create a new team — A fresh Fishladder team will be created with the data you import.
  • Import into existing team — Select one of your current teams. The wizard will check for naming conflicts in the next step.

Step 6: Resolve Conflicts (Existing Teams Only)

If any Asana project names match existing Fishladder project names, you'll see a conflict resolution screen. For each conflict, choose:

  • Update — Merge new tasks into the existing project.
  • Rename — Import as a separate project with a modified name.
  • Skip — Don't import that project.

Step 7: Map Fields & Users

Configure how Asana fields translate to Fishladder:

User Mapping

For each Asana user found in the selected projects, choose how to handle them:

  • Map — Link to an existing Fishladder team member.
  • Invite — Send them an email invitation.
  • Add (no invite) — Add to the team silently.
  • Skip — Their name will appear on comments and tasks as a text label, but they won't have a Fishladder account.

Users already in your team are auto-detected and shown with a "Joined" badge.

Step 8: Import

Review a summary of what will be imported, then click Start Import. You'll see real-time progress as each project is processed. Once complete, click Go to Projects to see your imported data.

Troubleshooting

OAuth error or "not connected"
Go back to the Connect step and re-authorize. Tokens can expire if you leave the wizard idle for a long time.
Missing tasks
Only tasks in the selected projects are imported. Subtasks are included, but tasks in other projects are not.
Comments show "Unknown" author
This happens when a user was skipped during mapping and their name wasn't available from Asana. The comment content is still imported.
